TEAM
Better Bahamian Building Consultants was founded by Dave Petersen and Bettina Hoar who have worked together for years helping Canadian clients and builders make more efficient and healthier homes. We both have a deep connection to The Bahamas and have realized that our knowledge and body of expertise, including a breadth of contacts locally and internationally, will benefit Bahamian clients, architects, builders and developers. Our goal is to help build better buildings in The Bahamas.
We will work to ensure your vision is translated into the space of your dreams, a home or commercial building that is energy efficient, healthy and mindful of site and community. Our approach combines the best of both worlds – the ability to explore options and ideas while providing an on time/on budget planning and construction methodology.
DAVID PETERSEN
David has accrued over 20 years of project and client relationship management in the building envelope and fenestration sector, coupled with a formal background in Management Studies through the University of Toronto.
David’s hands-on style of project management in Canada, the U.S and Caribbean is balanced with a technical background in building science consulting (OIDB sister company: Earthshine Bionomics® – facilitates companies in developing and building low energy, resilient, homes and light commercial structures) allows David to understand client wants and needs and translate these into a comprehensive package focused on meeting design goals while keeping budgets and timelines in check.
David maintains an active relationship with academia, teaching course content for the Canada Green Building Council’s™ Sustainable Building Advisor program and is a guest lecturer at George Brown Colleges School for Architectural Studies.
SBC™ Connection:
Sustainable Buildings Canada™ has been hosting building design charettes since 2003, utilizing the Integrated Design Process to help a diverse group of clients, including developers for both new and existing buildings, to achieve substantial energy savings while creating a more resilient and healthy built environment in the process.
David has been working with the team since 2010 as part of their group of expert designers, modelers and facilitators, enabling SBC to deliver quality results with better-than-code performance (25% or greater) and up to Net Zero Energy (NZE) performance in residential and commercial buildings.
BETTINA HOAR
Bettina is the founder of Sage Living Toronto, a Toronto based consulting firm providing homeowners with sustainable renovation coaching and project management. Highly service and client oriented, Bettina enjoys facilitating understanding and collaboration, empowering home owners to make well researched ‘wise green’ decisions when renovating or building, enabling more productive, more enjoyable, healthier places to live.
Sustainably designed and built environments take into account myriad choices to reduce impact to the site, minimize the use of non-renewable resources, optimize water quality and quantity, optimize the indoor environment, and also provide for flexible, adaptable, right-sized spaces that can stand the test of time, generally at no or minimal cost increase. Bettina is a Certified Sustainable Building Advisor experienced in facilitating the Integrated Design Process (IDP) which is a team approach where professionals (architect, builder, designer, engineers, window & HVAC providers, energy consultants, etc.) come together early in the process to work collaboratively to meet client’s goals.
Bettina is also Sustainable Buildings Canada’s Indoor Environmental Quality expert for Enbridge’s Savings by Design program that awards up to $100,000 in incentives to Ontario developers. In her spare time she is an avid volunteer for her daughters’ schools and several non-profit organizations that benefit culture, art and education. Bettina’s husband and teenage daughters are Bahamian and she has been a Permanent Resident since 1995.
